Nothing muted, ever.

So fall decorating? It’s a bit of an identity crisis for me every single year.

That’s exactly why trays have become my favorite fall trick. Small surface, big impact, and I still get to keep my color game strong.

Today I’m sharing three scenarios from my own home… coffee table, kitchen counter, and dining room table. Be sure to stick around for the last one. That’s where my love of color really wins the argument with “traditional fall!”

Why a Tray is the Best Way to Start Your Fall Look

Here’s the thing about a tray. It turns what would otherwise look like random clutter into something that looks… intentional.

Like you meant to do that. (Even if you grabbed half of it off a shelf five minutes ago.)

The trick is layering.

Toss in some pine cones or a little fall foliage, then add a few pieces you already own.

A chunky candle, a stack of books, a small pumpkin.

Mix big with small so it doesn’t look flat, and don’t be afraid to vary the height too… a tall candlestick next to something low and round does a lot of visual work for very little effort.

And remember the styling secret: odd numbers! Three pumpkins instead of two, three candles instead of a pair. It just looks better, I promise!

Doesn’t matter if your tray is a simple wood one or something with more personality… the tray itself basically becomes its own little color palette for that corner of the room.

And the best part? You can swap the whole thing out without rearranging a single piece of furniture!

The Inspiration: A Farmhouse Crock Full of Spoons

This is the photo and styling inspiration from Mathilde at Brocante Majolie. A great starting point!

My Fall Take: Stoneware and Spoons

I love this display for how unexpected it is on a kitchen counter.

The tray itself is a piece of Polish stoneware that belonged to my mother. It has such a beautiful blue and white pattern with subtle punches of coral.

It also has a short lip on the sides so that beautiful blue and white pattern spills right over the edge. It’s one of those pieces that’s as much about function as it is beauty, which is exactly why I love it.

Styled right up against the backsplash, I propped a wood board and a piece of wall art behind it, almost like a little gallery moment.

My wooden spoon “bouquet” includes a decorative rolling pin in a William Morris pattern tucked in among the spoons.

And surprise! Instead of a crock, I used a thrifted light sconce in a beautiful amber color. By just flipping it upside down, it became the perfect vessel for the “bouquet!” (and the glass is amazing, coupled with the glow of the candle!)

Plus a copper French press, a teal mug for a pop of color, and bittersweet berries trailing across the tray to tie it all together.

This is proof that a fall look doesn’t need a big surface to make an impact.

A smaller counter is actually one of the great places to try this, since everyday items you already use (like your favorite mug!) can double as decorative objects for the season.

Trees, Candles, and a Little Bit of Cozy: The Coffee Table Tray

Do you have favorite trays that you come back to every fall season? I definitely do!

A large round woven tray covers the entire glass top of my coffee table…perfect for warming up the shiny glass tabletop.

Then I layered a smaller tray with a rustic, gnarled wood handle right on top of it. I stacked a coffee table book underneath for height… It’s simply titled “Trees” by Gregory McNamee and photos by Art Wolfe. The cover has the most gorgeous fall color you’ve ever seen.

From there, I layered in a mix of velvet and knit pumpkins in deep green and warm orange, and copper taper candlesticks for some height against all those low, round shapes.

Front and center is my Hearth and Hand five-wick candle in the harvest chestnut scent. This is absolutely a new addition to my annual repurchase list! The warm candlelight and scent are amazing!

The color palette here is copper, deep green, and warm orange…such a classic fall color combination.

It’s cozy and warm, and it just invites you to sit on the sofa and snuggle in!

Chinoiserie and Velvet: The Dining Room Table

Okay, here it is. The one I told you to watch for, and my favorite of the three!

This is where my love of bright color really gets to shine. I used a wooden tray on my dining room table, paired with a wood pedestal for a little extra height. The two woods matched so beautifully they almost looked like they’d been sold as a set.

Layered across both, pieces from my blue and white chinoiserie collection… a teapot, a couple of ginger jars, a small lidded box.

Tall branches of faux fall foliage in orange, rust, and berry red give it even more height and movement. And velvet pumpkins in every shade of orange (chef’s kiss!) are tucked in throughout.

This palette, deep orange with blue and white, actually echoes my dining room wallpaper, so it feels like it belongs in the space rather than just sitting on top of it.

It’s proof that fall decor doesn’t have to mean muted and monochromatic. It can be just as vibrant as the rest of the year, if that’s your style.

Don’t Stop at One Tray: More Fall Tray Decor Ideas to Borrow

I’m crazy for trays! And there are endless possibilities for decorating them. Here are a few more ways to make one your own.

• Try a classic tiered tray for more surface area in a small footprint
• Use a tray on your entryway console or bathroom vanity… anywhere you’d normally set down keys or hand soap is fair game
• Layer two trays of different shapes, like a round one nested on a rectangular one, for something a little more sculptural
• Swap a tray out for a vintage dough bowl if you have one on hand… same layered look, different vessel entirely
• Keep odd numbers in mind wherever you land. Works just as well on a tiered tray as it does anywhere else
