Key Points

  • Go for height when styling a door hanging basket. Use tall stems to create an airy, upward flow that grabs attention from the street.
  • Layers your textures. Mixing different types of greenery and berries give a decorative basket a lush, full look.
  • Add finishing touches. Add a simple piece of ribbon to tie the whole color palette together.

Can we just talk about the weather for a second?

It is the middle of March and my front porch doesn’t know whether to wear a parka or a swimsuit!

One day we are dealing with blowing snow and wind that practically takes your hat off, and a few days later…we hit record highs in the upper 90’s!

It is definitely a little tricky trying to decorate for spring when winter and summer are breathing down your neck at the same time!

Despite the crazy temperature swings, I am so excited to part of this month’s Design Challenge. A huge thank you to Cindy at County Road 407 for organizing this group and keeping us all inspired.

For this challenge, we were all given this gorgeous inspiration photo from @velveteenandgrace on Instagram to interpret in our own style.

A front porch decorated with flowrs, bunnies, lanterns, and a hanging door basket.

I actually gasped when I saw the inspiration photo because I already own the exact same door basket AND the same adorable decorative rabbits. It felt a sign that this project was meant to be!

Baskets and the Bunnies

Since I own two of the items in the inspiration photo, I just have to share!

Inspiration for the Front Porch

When I looked at the inspiration photo, a few specific details really jumped out at me. Since I wanted to capture that same charming feel, I did what I always do…make a list!

Are you a list-lover too? High-five if you are!

This is a quick list of the elements I wanted to include on my own front door.

  • A textured hanging door basket as a focal point.
  • Lots of lush greenery to bring in that spring feeling. (Even if it snows again tomorrow!)
  • Sweet decorative pieces like the bunny statues and cute lanterns.
  • Hanging rabbit wall art to add interest beside the door.

Choosing the Right Foundation

Since our nights are still freezing, I had to be smart. I love real plants, but faux plants are the easy way to get that spring look without worrying that a late frost is going to kill everything off.

I started with my large outdoor planters. I used them to flank both sides of the front door to create some balance.

Inside the pots, I “planted” faux emerald green arborvitea trees. To make them look full and real, I filled the space at the base of the trees with faux ferns, faux cabbages, and even a couple of faux houseplants.

Fake plants have come along way. And I love decorating my house with faux plants when a real one won’t work!

These faux gems take care of the front porch while I wait for my nursery haul of real plants later in the spring.

The Art of Styling the Hanging Basket

Now let’s get to the star of the show…the hanging basket!

This is such a fun alternative to a typical wreath.

My basket has a flat back, which is a total game changer because it lays perfectly against the door without bouncing around.

Here is how I styled the inside for a look with personality:

Create Height and Movement

I wanted this to feel airy and tall. So I started with some multi-colored pip berry branches to act as the main feature.

A hanging door basket filled with greenery, tall pip berry stems, and wrapped in a chinoiserie ribbon.

Every year, I use these in various projects and often get questions as to where to find them. I haven’t been able to find these particular branches (They are about 12 years old!) but I did find some that are similar. Click HERE to take a look.

I let the stems stand tall with to create a lot of height. It makes the whole entryway feel a bit more grand!

Pip berries are fun and a little different than the usual basket filler. However, if you are not wanting to use pip berries, tall floral stems work beautifully too!

Anchor the Design

To keep those tall branches from looking like they are floating, I used some lush greenery (once again, faux!) and shorter pink pip berries at the opening of the basket.

Don’t be skimpy with this! Create a strong, solid base so the tall stems look like they are growing right out of them.

This anchors everything and makes the arrangement look full and professional.

Wrap It with Ribbon

To pull it all together, I took a piece of ribbon (I love to use wired ribbon for this.) and tied it around the neck of the basket.

It adds a little bit of coordinating color and just makes the whole thing feel finished.

Front Porch Finishing Touches

Remember the beautiful rabbit artwork from the inspiration photo?

So beautiful!

The idea of hanging artwork beside the door is so clever and unique.

So, while I don’t have any wall art bunnies at my house, I thought a thrift store bunny plate would do the trick!

Perfect tucked behind one of the planters…and actually hiding an old, ugly intercom. (a project for later!)

A bunny patterned plate hanging on the front of the porch under a light sconce.

There was an empty space in one of the planters and I had used all of my faux plants.

So I tucked a cute little lantern into the corner of the post. It filled the space perfectly and now we have ev

A Fresh Spring Welcome

I love that this whole styling project only took about 30 minutes to put together!

It is a little different than a typical wreath . But seeing those pops of pink berries and the way it all fits together makes me so happy every time I open the door.

Even if the weather can’t decide if it wants to be 30 degrees or 90 degrees, at my front door is ready for spring!

  1. Missy,
I love how your spring porch turned out! I hear you with the nutty weather… We had 94 degrees a couple of days ago, then 70s (much better). But ten days ago, freezing temps in the morning.

I am pretty sure Hobby Lobby had those colorful ball picks (pips??) this year. It’s the multi-colors which caught my attention. Beautiful basket and all those berries… Really pretty! And those bunnies!!!

    Enjoy your beautiful porch,
    Barb 🙂

  4. How fun to have already had the same bunnies and hanging basket! I agree, it was meant to be. For me, it’s because I adore your planters! I’ve never thought to add anything other than a plant! Right now, I have one very similar sitting in the garage waiting for the mister to replace it with our old one. It’s a fountain, and I love it. But not as much as YOURS! The little lantern and the faux cabbage are absolutely genius! And girl, that plate. You amaze me. I want to spend a week with you so that I can rub your head in hopes of attracting some of that creativity. Enjoy that beautiful porch. pinned
