Blue Christmas Decor Ideas

Ahhh…my beloved blue!

I’ve always loved the color blue…calm, classic, and endlessly versatile.

But until this year, I never really used it in my Christmas decorating.

Why not?

Maybe because it felt like such a departure from our traditional red and green Ralph Lauren-inspired Christmas tree.

Such a stretch from my beloved pink Christmas ornaments and rustic gold bells.

But as I started gathering a few pieces, I realized: blue doesn’t have to replace tradition. It can elevate it!

This holiday season, I decided to lean into my favorite color and give some of my Christmas decor a fresh twist.

In our primary bedroom, I decorated a white flocked Christmas tree using layered shades of blue…from soft wintery hues to deep midnight tones…and I fell in love with how the space felt.

Cozy, elegant, and a bit dreamy!

If you’re curious about trying a blue Christmas decor theme, you’re in for some fun. Below are ideas to help you bring a sophisticated, inviting blue‑themed look into your home!

Choosing the Right Shades of Blue

Before you shop for ornaments or ribbon, it helps to decide which blues you want to highlight.

Blue is remarkably versatile. But that’s also the reason choices matter. The tone you pick will set the mood for your holiday decor this year.

For me, picking the shades was like choosing a personality for my Christmas. I wanted something that felt cozy and intimate, but still fresh, beautiful, and a little bold. So I mixed in a little of everything!

Soft sky blues, richer cobalt tones, and a few deep navy touches for drama. (I can just feel the Christmas calm setting in!)

Tip for layering: Choose a dominant shade for larger pieces (like a tree ornament or throw pillows), then “sprinkle” lighter or darker shades for details. Ornaments, ribbons, and small accents are great places to start with blue Christmas decorations.

Light blues: These bring a delicate, airy feel and work beautifully for a “winter wonderland” aesthetic. When paired with white ornaments or silver accents, light blues feel crisp and elegant.

Rich blues (cobalt, peacock): These add depth and interest…perfect if you want a more sophisticated, layered look.

Deep navy or midnight blue: These shades are great for contrast and a classic‑meets‑modern feel. Add a few of these darker pieces to give the overall color palette some grounding.

With your color scheme chosen, the rest of your decor naturally begins to fall into place!

Blue Christmas Tree Ideas

Wouldn’t you agree? Decorating the tree is where the magic really happens.

Because a blue-themed tree becomes an instant focal point!

Tuck it in a cozy bedroom. Stand it tall in a family room. Or let the blue theme hold court in a dining room. This year, our flocked tree in the bedroom became my favorite holiday “corner.”

There’s something about blue ornaments glinting against snow‑white branches that feels both tranquil and festive…like a quiet snowfall captured inside your home.

It’s a great reminder that holiday decor creates a mood, and sometimes shades of blue are just what you need!

Here are the ideas that helped make our tree a favorite spot this season:

  • Blue ornaments galore: Mix up finishes: glossy glass, matte textures, mercury glass. These give your tree depth and variety. Use a mix of various shades of blue so the tree feels rich and layered, not flat.
  • Lighting matters: On a white Christmas tree, warm white lights cast a cozy, soft glow, while cool white lights give a crisp, wintery appearance. I went with warm lights. For me, that gives our tree a welcoming glow that is perfect in a calm and peaceful bedroom.
  • Ribbons & garlands for texture: Try draping soft blue velvet ribbon vertically for a flowing, luxurious feel. Alternatively, a flocked garland with silver specks adds subtle shimmer. A classic blue ribbon loosely woven through branches can tie the whole look together.
  • Choose a theme:
    • Modern & minimal: Stick to a limited palette (e.g., navy + silver + white) for a clean, contemporary look.
    • Coastal Christmas tree: Combine blue ornaments with natural textures (driftwood ornaments or seashells)
    • Classic elegance: Layer different blues with silver ornaments and maybe a few white or mercury-glass pieces for shimmer.

A tree like this doesn’t just decorate a space. It transforms it!

Tabletop and Mantel Decor

Decorating tables and mantels with blue accents can tie the whole room together.

You want harmonious flow. Not a scattered “leftover” look!

I love to treat the fireplace mantel, a coffee table, or even a dining table almost like part of the tree: another canvas for the holiday.

Soft candlelight, classic patterns, and a bit of nature can create cozy holiday vignettes throughout the house.

Here are some ideas that work beautifully:

  • Candles for warmth: Use white or neutral candles, grouped in clusters, to complement the blue accents without competing with them. Or light a jar candle with a fun blue pattern on the outside. The soft glow adds warmth and lets blue elements shine.
  • Blue-and-white chinoiserie pieces: These add timeless charm and sophistication. Whether vases, jars, or figurines, they bring a classic touch that pairs beautifully with blue ornaments and ribbons.
  • Dining table decor: Use blue‑toned napkins or a subtle blue ribbon around silverware. Place a few blue ornaments or small blue decorations as part of your table centerpiece. It ties the dining room into the rest of your holiday decor seamlessly.
  • Bring in nature: Pinecones, sprigs of evergreen, winter berries, and other natural elements create texture and warmth. They contrast nicely against the crispness of blues and metallic accents.

Whether it’s a cozy dinner night or a quiet moment with hot cocoa by the fire, these touches make the home feel intentional and festive!

Blue Accents Around the Home

You don’t need to limit the blue to the holiday focal areas. Small touches scattered throughout your home can help carry the theme beyond the tree and main rooms.

For me, adding blue accents outside the tree area feels like sprinkling a little holiday magic into everyday spaces. It turns ordinary corners like the front door or a hallway console into parts of the celebration.

Some ideas I love:

  • Textiles: Introduce blue with throw pillows, blankets, or even a rug. It’s such an easy swap! And suddenly that favorite chair or couch feels holiday-ready!
  • Wreaths with a twist: Instead of a full blue wreath, try adding a few blue ornaments, sprigs, or a simple blue ribbon to your wreath for a subtle nod to the theme.
  • Everyday decor gets holiday-ready: Lamps, picture frames, or small decorative objects in peacock shades or deep navy help extend the blue scheme beyond just one room.

These small touches remind you that holiday decorating doesn’t have to be all or nothing. Even everyday decor can contribute to the festive feel!

DIY Blue Christmas Decor

One of the best parts about decorating for Christmas is putting your personal stamp on it.

DIY projects let you inject personality and creativity. And sometimes, they’re more meaningful than store-bought decorations.

I love the idea of taking something simple and transforming it into a piece that feels truly “yours.”

This year, I spent a cozy afternoon at the kitchen table, music playing loudly (cause that’s how I roll!), and ended up with a handful of unique blue decorations with decoupage. Each one a little different… each one handmade.

You can see how I made them HERE.

Here are a few of my favorite DIY ideas:

  • Decoupage ornaments: This is my favorite way to add a personal (and budget-friendly!) touch to a beautiful tree. Use patterned napkins with abstract patterns, vintage prints, or winter florals. You will have one-of-a-kind pieces that reflect your style. You can see this project HERE.
  • Upcycle old stuff: Maybe you have old frames, jars, or ornaments you no longer use. A fresh coat of blue paint, some beautiful ribbon, or a little embellishment can breathe new life into them.
  • Budget-friendly decor: Wrap old boxes in blue or blue-and-white paper, tie with ribbon, and place them beneath a tree or on a mantel for a polished, gift‑wrapped look (even if they’re empty boxes). It’s a great way to use what you already have and stay stylish.

DIY projects let you add soul to your holiday decor. Every time I glance at one of those handmade ornaments, I smile!

Combining Blue with Other Holiday Colors

While a strictly blue holiday theme has its own magic, mixing blue with other colors can add warmth, contrast, and a bit of unexpected fun.

It’s like giving blue different personalities depending on what it shares the spotlight with.

This year, I experimented with a few color combinations…mixing metallics, soft tones, and even a pop of something bold. Here are combinations I find especially striking:

  • Blue + silver: A classic pairing…elegant, crisp, and wintry. This works especially well on a white tree or a fireplace mantel with snow-like whites and shimmering silver ornaments.
  • Blue + gold: For a warmer look, this color scheme is perfect for a traditional but luxurious feel. Great on dining tables or in a family room tree where gold adds richness against the blues.
  • Blue + white: Clean and timeless. Pair deep or light blues with crisp whites for a winter wonderland effect…soft, calm, and beautiful.
  • Blue + pink or blue + red: A more playful and unique twist. Try pink ornaments with soft blues for a colorful treat, or bold red accents with blue for a festive, cheerful contrast. Add metallic accents for sparkle, or layer different colors of ornaments for extra interest.

When you combine colors thoughtfully, you open up so many more possibilities. It’s a chance to make your holiday decor feel uniquely you. Not cookie-cutter, but creative, personal, and fun!
